One Day Only! National theatre production coming to Paignton and it’s free to all care staff !

Hello! Last month I wrote about the research I’d undertaken in my journey to understand the experiences felt by elderly people in the LGBTQ+ community in care homes. I felt I was ill equipped being neither LGBTQ+ nor receiving care in the elderly community, however it inspired me to dig deeper.

I wanted to find out about what it might be like for an elderly person who identified as LGBTQI+ in 2019. My simple answer would be: no different than anyone else, surely? I might be wrong.

What if, as an elderly person, I “came out” at a time when it wasn’t’ widely accepted? What if my family judged me? What if my friends treated me differently? And what if, in 2019, I find myself in a comfortable, friendly care home with a peer with opposing views?

On behalf of Kingsmount Residential Home, I am able to bring a short play, recommended by a representative from Skills for Care, and with the support of Torbay Council, that illustrates a relevant and heartfelt production to Torbay.

To help care facilities in Torbay and South Devon on their journey to understanding and assisting with staff awareness, Kingsmount Residential Home in partnership with Torbay Council has organised for a theatre troupe to come to The Lucky 7 Club in Paignton at 2pm on Thursday 9th May 2019 to perform The Purple List – a Gay Dementia Venture!

It opens on Sam and Derek’s wedding day and goes on to explore the highs and lows of their lives as Derek’s dementia progresses. Told from Sam’s point of view, the play is a touching, sad, yet often funny, insight into the lives of these two gay men as they navigate their way through the care system and the changes in their personal relationship.

There is also a Q&A session afterward. Tickets can be booked by emailing events@grayareas.co.uk. Please provide your name, Dob and email address.

The production takes place at The Lucky 7 Club - it is situated on the first floor and there are no lift facilities.

Tickets are free to people who work in care.
